Together we make the difference for the cats of Amsterdam

Over 90 volunteers make our work possible. They are the backbone of everything we do: from daily care to rescue operations and adoptions. There is always room for you.

What is volunteering at SAZ?

Most volunteers come every week. But even if you can come less often, you are welcome. There is a volunteer agreement, but you can always stop if it no longer suits you. Just a team that counts on you and cats that need your help.

What can you do?

Kennel caretaker

Feeding, cleaning, socializing. The backbone of the shelter. You get to know the cats and watch them grow.

Cat catcher

Going out to catch stray cats with humane traps. Sometimes exciting, always fulfilling.

Driver

Picking up and delivering cats: to and from the shelter, foster homes, the vet, or their new home.

Phone & administration

Taking reports, scheduling appointments, answering emails. The link between the outside world and the shelter.

Socialization

Teaching feral or cautious cats to trust again. By sitting quietly with them, talking, being patient.

Events & fundraising

Helping with campaigns, markets and events. Manning stands, flyering, or brainstorming new initiatives.

Volunteer story

“I started as a cat catcher, but nowadays I mainly do socialization. There is one cat I will never forget: a black tomcat that refused to be touched for two months. One morning he pressed his head against my hand. That moment — that is what you do it for.”

— Sandra, volunteer since 2019

What do we offer?

You will not be thrown in at the deep end. We let you shadow us and explain everything.

A great team

Over 90 volunteers and 5 permanent staff. There is always someone to talk to.

Volunteer certificate

Need a certificate for school, work or benefits? We will arrange it.

Fulfillment

You see the direct result of your work. A cautious cat that blossoms, a stray that finds a home.

What do we ask?

Reliability

If you say you will come, you come. The cats and the team count on you.

Regularity

The frequency differs per role, but regularity is important. Most volunteers come weekly.

Physical fitness

For some tasks (catching, lifting, cleaning) a reasonable level of fitness is needed.

Patience

With cats that are timid. With situations that are sometimes challenging. And sometimes with people.
